ACTIVITIES FOR THE 4th A AND 4th B STUDENTS

Dear students:

Have you completed TASKS I and II? I hope so! I have prepared two additional tasks for all of you- and yet another task for 4th A.


TASK III- Topic: Women in Nazi Germany.

READ Women in Nazi Germany (Walsh, pp.170-171) Prepare the FOCUS TASK on page 171 for an ORAL LESSON. You should be able to explain why you agree/disagree with the statements on Nazi policies for women providing specific info. to support your ideas.


TASK IV- PREPARATION for a REVISION TEST on "Nazi rule 1933-45"

In the TEST you will answer questions on how Hitler consolidated/strengthened his power by means of (A) successful domestic policies (B) intimidation and terror (C) propaganda and indoctrination. REVISE 6.2 Hitler´s Germany (Walsh, pp.158-177) and relevant material in your booklet. The test will probably be on June 23rd. or 24th. We will fix the date as soon as we meet.

TASK V- (ONLY FOR 4thA STUDENTS)
Topic: The League of Nations.

(A) Find the QUESTIONS ON THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS in the booklet.
(B) Read the questions I prepared for you. Concentrate on questions 7-11.
(C) READ Walsh 8.2 Why did the League fail in the 1930s? (pp.244-54) Look for the info. you will need to answer the questions- do not forget to analyse the sources.
(D) TYPE CONCISE answers to questions 7-11 (average length of the answers: 5 lines. Answers to questions 8 and 9 can be longer)
(E) Correct the answers and PRINT them. Be ready to hand them in when we meet.

ACTIVIDADES PARA LOS ALUMNOS DE 4o AÑO

Dear students:
The following TASKS are for the 4thA and 4thB students. You should type them and should be ready to hand in your work when classes are renewed. I will not accept handwritten papers.


TASK I- TOPIC: Nazi terror and intimidation.

READ "Nazi control of Germany, 1933-45" in Walsh, pp. 160-161. WRITE the FOCUS TASK p. 161 following the instructions which I have clarified for you below.

TITLE: Nazi terror and intimidation, 1933-45

Discuss the SS and the other instruments of the Nazi police state and explain who controlled each of them, what their duties were, what their methods were and how each of them helped Hitler secure his position.

TASK II- TOPIC: Why was opposition to the Nazis so ineffective? FOCUS TASK, Walsh, p.163-

PREPARATION:

(A) Work through pages 158-163 (do not forget to read the sources)
(B)You can use the info. to complete a rough copy of the table in Walsh as he suggests.
(C) You should also reread pages 18G and 18 H in the booklet- you will find some of the info. useful.
(D) Write an essay. TITLE: "How effectively did the Nazis deal with their opponents?
Devote 2/3 paragraphs to EACH of the groups listed by Walsh in the FOCUS TASK. Write 1/2 paragraphs on their reasons for being opponents and their actions. You will need 1/2 paragraphs for the Nazi reaction and an evaluation of its effectiveness. Do not forget to write an INTRODUCTION and a CONCLUSION.
(E) Correct your essay carefully and PRINT it.

Activities for 5th. year students

5th YEAR- PREPARATION FOR OUR FIRST CLASS-

TASK I-Topic: The consequences of the Cuban Missile Crisis-

Answer questions 6-10 on T.E. Vadney´s The Aftermath. As you know, you will find them in the 5th. year booklet. Study the answers for an ORAL LESSON. Add a new question:
To what extent did the Cuban Missile Crisis reflect the globalisation and militarisation of the Cold War that started with the Korean War?


TASK II- The AIM of this task is to prepare you for the test on the Cuban Missile Crisis that you will write in our SECOND class. Be ready to hand in your work if requested.


(A) Read carefully the IB questions listed below
(B) TYPE a suitable INTRODUCTION for an essay on question 1. The introduction should be
a brief, clearly focussed answer to the question. Avoid using expressions such as I think... in
my opinion or vague meaningless phrases such as it made superpower relations more
hostile/worse...
(C) TYPE a LIST OF YOUR MAIN ARGUMENTS. Bear in mind the importance of dates, chronology and specific evidence in history papers.
(D) Do the same for each of the questions listed below using DIFFERENT SHEETS for each question.

IB questions:

1- Analyse the part played by Cuba in the development of the Cold War .
2- In what ways, and with what results, did the United States´ Cold War policy of containment affect Cuba after 1959?

3-Why did the Soviet Union decide to place missiles in Cuba in 1962?

4-"The danger of the Cuban Missile Crisis has been seriously overestimated" To what extent do you agree with this statement?

5th. YEAR- SECOND CLASS- You will write a test on the Cuban Missile Crisis- Revise all your sources on the topic (Walsh and booklet)

PREPARATION FOR OUR THIRD CLASS:

TASK I: Read "Case study 3:the Vietnam War" in Walsh pp.353-355 and the additional info. on the Vietnam War in the booklet. Prepare the following questions for an ORAL LESSON:

1- Discuss Vietnamese resistance to Japanese rule during WW II (1941-45)
2- Discuss the Vietnamese War of Independence from France (1946-54) Consider the reasons for French defeat and the division of French indochina by the Geneva Accords in 1954 (the ACTIVITY in Walsh p.353 will be useful)
3- Why did the USA become increasingly involved in Vietnam? Bear CHRONOLOGY in mind and try to establish whether there was CONTINUITY OR CHANGE between the policies of TRUMAN, EISENHOWER, KENNEDY, JOHNSON. You will find my OUTLINE on THE VIETNAM WAR in the booklet useful.

TASK II- Read Walsh pp.355-361- Read FOCUS TASK B (p.355)- Do the reading following the stages suggested by Walsh and WRITE UP STAGE 3-
Title: Why was the US army unable to defeat the communists in Vietnam? TYPE your answer following the structure suggested by Walsh: do points a-b-c-d- devoting two or three paragraphs to each point. Correct language and spelling.
Handwritten papers will not be accepted. Plagiarism will be penalised.
